Etymology: "Desport" is an old English word for amusement, play, or recreation, and it arrived by way of Anglo-Norman and Old French, where "desporter" meant to take pleasure. Its roots lie in the Latin "portare," to carry, combined with "de-," which here gives the sense of carrying oneself away from one's cares. Medieval speakers of French used the verb to describe the relief of putting work aside and enjoying oneself. English borrowed the word in Middle English as "disporten," and the form "desport" developed from that. The shift from carrying to pleasure is the surprising part: a verb about moving or bearing something became one about lightening the mind. Over the centuries the word narrowed to the sense of play and leisure it carries today, though it remains a literary and archaic choice compared with "disport" or "sport."
