Deseed

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. To take out or extract the seeds from a fruit or vegetable
  2. To remove seeds from food by cutting, scooping, or other means
  3. To rid a fruit or plant material of its seeds

Etymology: "Deseed" is a plain formation: the prefix "de-", meaning "removing or taking away from", attached to "seed". The result is a verb meaning to remove the seeds from a fruit, vegetable, or pepper, so that the flesh alone is left for cooking or eating. The prefix does most of the work here. Its Latin source, "de", carried senses of downward motion or separation, and English has long used it to reverse or subtract an action, as in "defrost" or "debone". Attaching it to "seed" gives a precise kitchen instruction in one word, without needing a longer phrase like "remove the seeds from".
