Etymology: Deschampsia is the scientific name for a genus of grasses, and its name honours a French botanist, Louis Auguste Deschamps, who collected plants in the late eighteenth century. Botanists in the early nineteenth century, including the French naturalist Palisot de Beauvois, who described the genus in 1812, often named plant genera after collectors, teachers and patrons, and this is one of them. The name was built by adding a Latinised ending to the surname, so the word itself has no meaning in Greek or Latin beyond that personal tribute. The word is therefore a modern scientific coinage rather than an ancient one, and it belongs to the family of names that honour people in the way that "magnolia" honours Pierre Magnol or "fuchsia" honours Leonhart Fuchs. Its scientific use is restricted to botany, and it was formed in the same period as many other genus names built from personal surnames.
