Derussified

Part of speech: adjective, verb

Definitions

  1. Describing the process of removing Russian influence or characteristics from a place, culture, or language; indicating the elimination of Russian cultural, linguistic, or political elements; denoting the transition away from Russian-oriented identity or control
  2. Characterizing actions aimed at eradicating Russian cultural norms or language from a society or institution; referring to the diminishing presence or impact of Russian-related features; signifying the shift toward reducing Russian heritage or dominance
  3. Pertaining to efforts to expunge Russian language, traditions, or governance from an area or group; involving the withdrawal or rejection of Russian cultural or political marks; expressing the movement toward a non-Russian affiliated state or condition

Etymology: Russification, the policy of imposing Russian language and institutions on other peoples of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union, is the word that "derussified" reverses. The prefix "de-" means "removing" or "reversing," so the verb "derussify" simply means to undo Russification: to strip Russian language, customs or administration out of a territory or community. Because "Russify" is the base, the reversal is built directly on the older policy word rather than on any separate Russian term. The verb's second-form "derussified" serves as the past tense and past participle, so it can describe a region that has already been freed of Russian influence ("the derussified schools") as well as the act itself ("the government derussified the curriculum"). The adjective sense in the definition above follows the same logic, describing whatever has undergone that process.
