Etymology: "Depicter" is a plain formation: the verb "depict" with the agent suffix "-er," meaning one who performs the action. "Depict" itself came into English from Latin "depingere," "to paint out" or "to paint down," built from "de-" (down, out) and "pingere" (to paint). The sense of picturing something in paint, and then in words, grew out of that literal painting meaning. So the noun carries the same double range as its base: a person who makes pictures, and a person who describes something vividly in language. The suffix "-er" has been attached to English verbs since Old English, and this formation follows the same pattern as "painter" or "narrator."
