Denominationalize

Definitions
- To remove or reduce the distinctions and affiliations associated with religious sects or groups, creating a more unified or nonsectarian context
- To transform or adapt an institution, practice, or belief by eliminating its ties to specific religious denominations, promoting general or inclusive identity
- To neutralize or dissolve denominational characteristics in order to lessen division based on religious affiliations and encourage broader acceptance
Etymology: "Denominationalize" is a plain formation: "denominational" with the verbal suffix "-ize" added. "Denominational" comes from "denomination," a religious sect or group bearing a particular name, and the suffix "-ize" turns a noun or adjective into a verb meaning to make or treat something in a certain way. To denominationalize something is therefore to strip it of its affiliation with a particular religious group, making it nonsectarian. The word's meaning follows that pattern closely. Schools, charities, hospitals and other institutions founded by a church or sect may be denominationalized when their religious labels and control are removed, so that they serve the public without belonging to one faith. The verb thus describes a deliberate institutional change rather than a loose figure of speech.
