Dehormonalize

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. To remove or reduce hormones from a substance or organism, often to alter physiological effects or behavior
  2. The process of extracting or neutralizing hormonal compounds within a sample or living being to diminish their biological activity
  3. Eliminating or suppressing the influence of hormones in a material or creature, commonly to modify its natural hormonal balance or response

Etymology: "Hormone" was coined by the English physiologist Ernest Starling, who took it from the Greek "hormaein," meaning "to set in motion" or "to urge on." He chose it because these chemical messengers were understood to stir the body's organs into action. The word is a deliberate scientific coinage built from classical roots, not an ancient term given a new sense. This verb is assembled in three layers. The prefix "de-," from Latin, means "removing" or "reversing," and it is attached to "hormonal," an adjective formed in English by adding "-al" to "hormone." The ending "-ize," which passed from Greek through Latin, turns the whole into a verb. Each part is transparent, so the word simply means to take hormonal substances out of something.
