Etymology: Ancient Romans described a sloping hillside with the adjective "declivis," built from "de-" meaning "down" and "clivus," a slope or rising ground. Both words grew from a root meaning to lean or bend, which also gave English "incline" and "recline." English adopted the Latin material as "declivity," the familiar form, and as the rarer "declive," which keeps a shorter shape. Both name ground that falls away, whether the flank of a hill or the stretch of a road running downhill.
