Decarburizing

Part of speech: verb, noun

Definitions

  1. The process of reducing the carbon content in a metal, typically steel, by chemical reaction or heat treatment resulting in a softer surface layer ; the removal of carbon from the outer portion of a metal part ; a metallurgical technique that decreases carbon concentration to alter mechanical properties
  2. A metallurgical method involving the extraction of carbon atoms from metal surfaces through chemical or thermal means to improve ductility ; stripping carbon from the outer layer of metal pieces to modify hardness or wear resistance ; a controlled chemical alteration that reduces surface carbon content in metallic materials
  3. An industrial treatment that eliminates carbon from metal surfaces by exposing them to oxidizing environments or decarburizing agents to change texture ; a surface engineering process lowering carbon percentages to affect strength ; a thermal-chemical procedure that draws carbon out from steel or iron to achieve specific mechanical characteristics

Etymology: Decarburizing is a plain technical formation: the prefix "de-", meaning "removing or reversing," attached to "carburize," which means to combine a metal with carbon. Together they name the removal of carbon from iron or steel, the reverse of the carburizing process that hardens steel by adding carbon to its surface. The prefix "de-" comes from Latin, where it meant "down," "away," or "off," and it was used to form many English verbs expressing reversal or removal, such as "decompose" and "defrost." "Carburize" is itself a modern metallurgical coinage built from "carbon," so the whole word belongs to the vocabulary of industrial metalworking rather than to older English. The practical meaning is what makes the term useful. Steel with high carbon content is hard but brittle, and a surface depleted of carbon becomes softer and more ductile, which is why the process is used on parts that must be shaped or machined, and why the outer layer of a part can differ from its core.
