Etymology: "Debtholders" is simply the plural of "debtholder," a compound formed from "debt" and "holder." Both parts are old, English-rooted in their own right: "holder" comes from the verb "hold," and "debt" was borrowed from Old French "dette," itself from Latin "debitum," the neuter past participle of "debere," meaning "to owe." The compound combines the two in the plainest way, describing whoever holds the debt. The sense of the word is therefore literal: a holder is someone who possesses something, and a debtholder possesses an obligation owed to them. Its formation follows the same pattern as many other English compounds in which a noun is paired with "holder" to name the possessor of a thing, such as shareholder or stockholder.
