Etymology: Deanimation is a straightforward English formation: the prefix "de-", meaning removal or reversal, attached to "animation" in its older sense of giving life or spirit. It names the opposite process, the loss of vitality from a body or thing. That older sense comes from Latin. "Anima" meant breath, life or soul, which gave the verb "animare", to give life to, and the noun "animatio", a bringing to life. English "animation" kept that meaning of enlivening, and "deanimation" reverses it.
