Dammars

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A type of resin obtained from specific coniferous trees, often utilized in the production of varnishes and incense
  2. A natural secretion sourced from certain evergreen trees, valued for its aromatic properties and use in traditional medicine
  3. A viscous substance derived from various trees, particularly those in the genus Dipterocarpaceae, employed in the manufacture of perfumes and fragrance products

Etymology: "Dammars" is the plural of "dammar," a resin gathered from certain tropical evergreen trees, mostly in Southeast Asia, and used for varnishes, lacquers and incense. The word was borrowed into English from Malay, where "damar" is the general term for resin, and it has kept that plain sense of a tree's gum rather than acquiring figurative meanings. Because the substance was traded through Malay ports, its name travelled with the goods, which is why European languages generally took it from the same source.
