- A type of boat, usually crafted from wood, typically utilized in the tourism industry to navigate the waters of the Nile River
Etymology: The Nile sailboat known as the dahabeeyah takes its name from an Arabic adjective meaning "golden," so its literal sense is "the golden one." The ship's glamour is built into the word: in Arabic, "ḏahabiyya" is the feminine form of "ḏahabī," derived from "ḏahab," gold. The name was applied to a vessel that was clearly meant to impress, not merely to carry cargo. Traditionally these boats were a favourite of travellers on the Nile, who used them for leisurely voyages with cabins, awnings and comfortable accommodation. The name reflects the gilded, decorated character that made these vessels stand out on the river. The spelling "dahabieh" is the more common form in English, while "dahabeeyah" is an alternative transliteration of the same Arabic word. Both forms preserve the original Arabic link to gold.
Synonyms: Nile boat, luxury barge, river cruiser
