- A collective term for those who routinely use bicycles for transportation or leisure

Etymology: "Cyclers" is simply the plural of "cycler", a noun that combines "cycle" with the agent suffix "-er", so it names a person who rides or operates a cycle. The "cycle" here is the pedal-powered vehicle, the bicycle and its relatives, rather than the more general sense of a recurring round of events. Some dictionaries also treat the word as a clipping of "bicycler", which would make it a shortened form of the older term for a rider of a bicycle. The word shares a curious kinship with "wheeler". The two are what linguists call a piecewise doublet: each arose from a different part of the same underlying idea of a wheeled thing, one through "cycle" and one through "wheel", so they overlap in sense without being formed the same way.
