Etymology: Outside cookery and horse care, this spelling is mostly a Scottish surname, and several of its bearers take it from places. Currie, near Edinburgh, may come from Scottish Gaelic "currach", meaning "boggy plain". Corrie in Dumfriesshire gave its name to another family, and some Curries are descended from "Mac Mhuirich", which became McMurray. The spelling sits beside "cury" and "curry", the forms used for the spiced stew and the grooming comb. The dish takes its name from Tamil "kari", meaning sauce, which reached English through Portuguese.
