Etymology: "Cryptococcosis" is a modern medical coinage built from two parts that each carry their own history. The first, "cryptococcus," combines the Greek "kryptos," meaning hidden or concealed, with "kokkos," meaning berry or seed, so the name describes a round cell that hides within its surroundings. The second part, "-osis," is a Greek-derived suffix used in medicine to name a diseased or abnormal condition, so a word like this one names an infection caused by that organism. The word therefore describes the disease by its cause rather than its symptoms. Its first element refers to the fungal genus Cryptococcus, which is the organism responsible, and the suffix turns that genus name into the name of the illness it produces. Because the term was assembled from classical roots on demand as the disease was recognised and named, it does not descend from any ancient Greek or Roman usage.
