Crunked
Part of speech: adjective, verb
Definitions
- To have become highly intoxicated or inebriated
- to be in a state of energetic excitement often associated with partying
- to experience an intense feeling of enthusiasm typically motivated by music or dance
Etymology: Crunk is a case where the most compelling fact is the one nobody can settle. It was used in Southern US nightclubs from the late 1980s to describe a crowd whipped into rowdy, high-energy abandon, and it became famous through the crunk music genre of the 1990s and early 2000s, above all after Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz released their 1997 debut album "Get Crunk, Who U Wit: Da Album." Its origin is genuinely open. One proposal blends "crazy" and "drunk," another blends "chronic" (marijuana) and "drunk," and a third links it to a dialectal past tense of "crank." Each fits the sense of wild, intoxicated excitement, but none is documented. The "crunked" form is simply the past tense and past participle, so a person can be described as having gotten crunked. The superficially similar German and Yiddish "krank" ("sick") is a coincidence, with no evidence of any link through Jewish shopkeepers in Black neighborhoods, a story sometimes repeated online.
