Etymology: "Cruised" is the past tense of "cruise," so its history belongs to that base verb. "Cruise" was borrowed from Dutch "kruisen," meaning "to cross," which comes from "kruis," a cross, ultimately from Latin "crux." The original idea was of crossing back and forth over water, which is why the word first described sailing about on patrol or in search of something. The modern sense of gliding along smoothly or taking a leisurely voyage grew from that picture of moving over a broad stretch without hurry.
