Etymology: "Crimebusters" is the plural of "crimebuster", formed from "crime" and "buster". The second element is the older and more interesting half. "Buster" was American slang that came to mean a person who breaks or smashes something, and from there it took on the sense of someone who tackles or takes down a problem, as in "bronco buster" for a rider who breaks wild horses. Pairing "buster" with "crime" produces a set of words in which the noun names a person who confronts whatever the first element names. The pattern is productive and informal, which is why "crimebuster" reads as a cheerful, slightly comic title for a detective or hero rather than a formal job description. The plural simply names the group of such people, whether a police unit, a team of vigilantes, or the heroes of a comic book.
