Costumist

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A person who creates the clothing and outfits worn by actors, performers or characters in films, plays and other productions
  2. Someone whose work involves designing or constructing costumes for theatrical, film or other performance settings
  3. A professional who conceives and makes the attire that performers wear to represent a particular character or era

Etymology: "Costumist" is simply "costume" with the suffix "-ist" attached, the same ending found in "artist" or "pianist," which marks a person who practises or works with something. A costumist is therefore someone who designs or makes costumes, usually for theatre, film or other performance. The base word "costume" came into English from French, where it had earlier been borrowed from Italian "costume," meaning custom or fashion of dress. That Italian word traces back to Latin "consuetudo," meaning custom or habit, so the idea of dress began as a matter of what people habitually wore.
