Etymology: "Costless" is about as plain as English compounds get: the noun "cost" with the suffix "-less", meaning "without", so it describes something without cost. The sense is the one the definition gives, obtained or provided without any need to pay money. Dutch has a close parallel in "kosteloos", which carries the same meaning of "free of charge" and is built the same way from its own word for cost plus a suffix meaning "without". The interesting part is less the formation than the rivalry. English already had "free" for this idea, and "costless" is often used where a writer wants to stress that no expense is involved at all, as in a transaction or a service that carries no fee, rather than the looser sense of something merely being given away.
