Etymology: The Greek philosopher Diogenes of Sinope is said to have called himself a "kosmopolitēs", a citizen of the world, rather than of any single city. The compound joins "kosmos", meaning "world" or "order", with "politēs", meaning "citizen", and the idea of belonging everywhere rather than to one place is built into the word from the start. The word passed into Latin as "cosmopolita" and from there into French as "cosmopolite", which is where English borrowed it. Over time the English noun has kept its core sense of someone at home anywhere in the world, while the image of a worldly, well-travelled person has become its everyday flavour.
