Corbusier

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A renowned Swiss-French architect known for his innovative approach to modern architecture and urban planning
  2. A significant figure in the development of the International Style, characterized by functionalism and minimalism in design
  3. An influential designer recognized for integrating new materials and technologies in 20th-century architectural practices

Etymology: Before he became a famous architect, Charles-Édouard Jeanneret adopted a new name. "Le Corbusier" was a pen name drawn from the surname of his maternal grandfather's family, Lecorbésier, which resembles the French "corbeau," meaning crow. He first used it while writing essays for the magazine L'Esprit Nouveau, where he argued for modern design inspired by machines. Over time the pseudonym overtook his birth name in public use, and it is the name by which the designer is known to the world.
