Etymology: "Cooperates" is the third-person singular present form of "cooperate," so it is the verb itself, used with a subject like "she" or "it." The verb entered English around 1595 to 1605, borrowed from the Late Latin "cooperatus," a form of "cooperari," meaning "to work with." Its parts are the prefix "co-," meaning "together," and "operate," so the whole word literally means working together. The surprise is that English already had a native way to say this. Before the Latin borrowing, Old English speakers used "efnwyrcan," built from "efn" (equal, even) and "wyrcan" (to work), which means roughly "to work evenly." The Latin verb pushed it out of use, so the older word disappeared while the newer one took its place.
