"Hombre continuo" meant "constant and steadfast man," and the noun is what remained after "hombre" was dropped, leaving the adjective to stand alone. The musical sense follows from that steadiness: a continuous bass part held steadily beneath the other voices. The Spanish adjective comes from Latin "continuus," meaning "constant" or "continuous."
