Etymology: Consultations is simply the plural of "consultation", so its history is that of the singular noun. The root is the Latin verb "consulere", meaning to consider, deliberate or take counsel, and the noun "consultatio" grew from it: a deliberation, or a seeking of advice. English took the word from Middle French "consultation", which had itself come from that Latin noun. The English "consult" stands behind the form, and the suffix "-ation" turns the verb into a noun of action, so a consultation is literally the act of consulting.
