Etymology: "Conquerors" is simply the plural of "conqueror," which means a victorious military invader. The singular traces back to Middle English "conquerour," borrowed from Old French "conquereor," which came from the verb "conquerre," meaning to conquer. Behind that verb stands Latin "conquirere," to seek out or acquire, built from "com-" (together, thoroughly) and "quaerere," to seek. The notion of winning territory by force is thus a later narrowing of an older sense of searching for and gathering things.
