Etymology: "Connectedness" is a plain English formation: the adjective "connected" with the suffix "-ness", which turns a quality or state into a noun. The suffix does the real work here. "-ness" descends from an Old English noun ending that was attached to adjectives from the earliest English, which is why it can be added almost freely to any adjective to name the state of being that way. "Connectedness" is therefore less a word with a dramatic past than a product of that productive English pattern, applied to a verb borrowed from Latin.
