Etymology: In Latin, "concernere" meant to mix things together or sift them, from "com-" ("together") and "cernere" ("to sift, separate"). The same root gives English "discern" and "certain," which both involve sorting things apart. The modern sense of relating to or involving something came later, through Old French "concerner" and Medieval Latin "concernere," which applied the idea of things brought together to matters that bore on one another. English took over that sense of pertaining to or having to do with something, while the older idea of sifting faded from use.
