Etymology: "Comprehenders" is simply the plural of "comprehender," a noun formed from the verb "comprehend" with the agent suffix "-er," so it names people or things that comprehend. The verb itself comes from Latin "comprehendere," meaning "to grasp together" or "to seize," built from "com-" ("together") and "prehendere" ("to grasp"). Its original sense was physical: to take hold of something, which is why the same root also gives English "apprehend," meaning to arrest, and "prehensile," meaning adapted for grasping. The plural form appears mainly in discussions of understanding, learning and cognition, where a writer might refer to a group of people who grasp a subject, as opposed to those who merely hear it. The word's meaning therefore moved from the act of physically seizing something to the mental act of taking in an idea.
