Compactifies
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- To make something more dense or concentrated by reducing its volume or expanding its mass
- To cause a substance to become more tightly packed, often enhancing its efficiency or effectiveness
- To transform an object or material into a more compact state, minimizing wasted space or volume
Etymology: This is a regular formation: "compact" (from Latin "compactus", "pressed together", the past participle of "compingere") with the suffix "-ify", which entered English through Old French "-ifier" from Latin "-ificare", meaning "to make". "Compactify" therefore means "to make compact", and "compactifies" is the third-person singular present form, "makes something denser" or more tightly packed. The "-ify" ending has an unusual Latin ancestry. It comes from "-ficare", a form built on "facere", "to make" or "to do", which is also the source of "fact" and "factory" in English. So the verb carries inside it the same idea of making that gives English words such as "beautify" and "simplify".
