Etymology: "Collages" is the plural of "collage", a noun taken straight from French, where "collage" means the act of pasting or gluing. The French word is itself a derivative of "coller", "to glue", which traces back through Latin to a Greek root meaning glue, so the art form is named for the very act of sticking pieces together. Because English adopted the French term without adapting its spelling or pronunciation, "collage" still looks and sounds foreign, a reminder that the medium was once a novelty imported from Paris. Its relatives are more distant than they first appear: the same Greek root gave English "collagen", the protein that holds tissue together, "colloid", a substance whose particles are suspended in another, and "protocol", literally the first sheet glued to a document.
