Etymology: "Coiffuring" is the verb form of "coiffure," and the chain behind it runs through a medieval cap. Late Latin "cofia" referred to a close-fitting cap, and it passed into Old French as "coife," meaning a headpiece or hood. French then built "coiffer," to dress or arrange someone's hair, and from that verb came "coiffure," the arrangement itself. English borrowed "coiffure" from French, and the verb "coiffure" and the gerund "coiffuring" followed, so a word for the cap that covered the hair eventually came to name the work of styling it.
