Etymology: "Cognises" is the third-person singular present form of "cognise", the British spelling of "cognize". The verb "cognise" is a counterpart of "recognise" and comes from the Latin "cognoscere", meaning "to get to know", which is built from "com-" (together, intensive) and "gnoscere" (to know). The same Latin root gave English "cognition", "recognise" and "incognito". Its literal sense is therefore close to "to come to know thoroughly", which explains why the modern meaning centres on grasping a fact through awareness.
