Etymology: "Codeathons" is the plural of "codeathon," a noun for a group coding event, where programmers gather to build software together within a set time, often over a day or a weekend. The word is a plain compound: "code," the programming term, joined to "-athon," a suffix taken from "marathon." The suffix is the more interesting half. "Marathon" was named after the Greek town of Marathon and the legendary run of a messenger from the battle there, and English later pulled its ending out as a productive element meaning an extended, endurance-style event. Words like "telethon" and "walkathon" followed the same pattern, each swapping in a new first element for the activity, with the sense of long, sustained effort carried over.
