Definitions

Etymology: The most surprising turn here is that a carriage gave its name to a teacher. The vehicle takes its name from Kocs, a small Hungarian town that earned its living building carts and carrying travellers between Vienna and Budapest. The name travelled through German and Middle French before reaching English as "coach." The figurative sense came from Oxford University slang, around 1830, for a tutor who "carries" a student through an examination, much as a carriage carries a passenger along the road. The athletic sense followed in 1861. Use of the word for training in sport and skill thus grew out of the university tutor's role, not the other way round.
