Etymology: "Climber" is a straightforward formation: the verb "climb" with the agent suffix "-er," which turns an action into the person or thing performing it. The verb itself came into Middle English as "clymben," and the agent form "clymbere" followed the same pattern as other "-er" nouns such as "baker" or "reader." The suffix is what lets the word name anything that climbs, from a mountaineer to a plant. The verb's earlier senses were broader than physical ascent. Middle English "climben" could also mean to rise, to advance, or to aspire, and it was used of approaching God in prayer. So the older agent noun carried the same sense of striving upward, a meaning that the modern word still hints at when we speak of a career climber or a social climber.
