Etymology: "Climatized" is the past form of "climatize," which is built from "climate" and the suffix "-ize." "Climate" comes from Greek "klima," meaning "slope" or "inclination," referring to the tilt of the earth's surface relative to the sun's rays. The ancient Greeks reasoned that the angle at which sunlight struck a region determined its heat, so the word came to mean a whole region's characteristic weather and temperature. The suffix "-ize" comes from Greek "-izein," used to form verbs meaning "to make into" or "to make like." Attaching it to "climate" produces a verb meaning to make something conform to a climate, so that a plant, animal, person or machine can cope with local conditions. The verb is a modern formation from these existing parts rather than an old inherited word, and it describes a process that people have been deliberately carrying out with crops, livestock and soldiers for much of recorded history.
