Etymology: The Greek "klimax" meant "ladder" or "staircase," and its derivative "klimaktēr" meant a rung or step on that ladder. Greek writers, and later Roman ones, used the term "klimaktēr" for a critical stage in life, a notion rooted in the idea that a person's life climbed a ladder of stages, with certain rungs considered especially dangerous. The Greek adjective "klimaktērikos" carried that sense of a decisive step, and Latin borrowed it as "clīmactēricus." English took the word from Latin, and it now describes any turning point of significance, from a human's later years to a moment of crisis in a larger process. The sense of the ladder survives in the way the word implies a step up or down that cannot be avoided. Its use in English as an adjective describes whatever stands at such a rung, whether a phase of life or a stage in a natural cycle.
