Etymology: "Classmates" is the plural of "classmate", a compound built from "class" and "-mate". The second element, "mate", is the familiar word for a companion or fellow, as in "shipmate" or "playmate," and it has been attached to nouns to name someone who shares a particular situation or position with you. "Class" itself, in the sense of a group of students taught together, brings the older Latin idea of a division or rank of people into a teaching setting. Put together, "classmate" names the person who sits in the same group under the same teacher. The plural simply counts several such companions. Because the word is transparent, its parts still reveal its meaning: a fellow member of your class.
