Etymology: "Clanswoman" is a plain compound: "clan" joined to "woman", with an "-s-" linking the two, following the pattern of "clansman," the older and more familiar term for a male member. The linking "s" comes from the male form, so the word was built by analogy rather than inherited from any older tradition of naming women of a clan. The word's shape also has a curious parallel. It is what linguists call a piecewise doublet of "plantswoman," meaning the two words share the same construction and were formed on the same model, even though "plantswoman" refers to a woman skilled in growing plants. The pattern "-s-woman" was clearly available in English as a way to create female counterparts to nouns ending in "-sman." Because "clan" came into English from Scottish Gaelic "clann" meaning "children" or "offspring," the word's core meaning is really about shared descent.
