Etymology: Cisgender is built from the Latin prefix "cis-", meaning "on this side of," which is the opposite of "trans-" ("across"). Its partner is "gender," itself traced back through Old French "gendre" to Latin "genus," meaning kind or birth. The English word "gender" was used for grammatical classes long before it described identity, so the modern sense is a relatively recent extension. Adding "-ed" to "gender" produced the adjective "gendered," which describes someone shaped or categorised by gender. Placing "cis-" in front of it gives a term for people whose gender identity lines up with the sex they were assigned at birth. The word therefore names a position relative to a norm rather than describing a condition in itself.
