Etymology: Circumvolution is a plain compound: the Latin prefix "circum-", meaning "around", joined to "volution", a noun from the Latin "volutio", which comes from "volvere", "to roll or turn." Put together, the word describes something that turns around, or winds about a centre. English has used it in two broad senses. The first is literal motion, a turning around a focal point. The second is the winding, spiral or looping shape of a route or path, and by extension the intricate folds and coils found in living tissue, such as the convolutions of the brain. The same root gives English "revolve," "evolve" and "volute," the spiral scroll on a column capital.
