Chromas
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- Describing variations in color or hues found within a spectrum
- indicating particular hues or chromatic qualities in visual representations
- relating to the intensity and purity of colors in various contexts
Etymology: In ancient Greek, "chrōma" meant both colour and skin or complexion, a pairing that reflects how closely the Greeks linked a thing's hue to its visible surface. English took the root as "chroma," and the "-s" ending in "chromas" is simply the plural, so the word names several such qualities at once. In colour science, chroma has a narrower meaning than everyday hue. It measures how intense or saturated a colour is relative to its brightness, so a set of chromas describes differences in strength of colour rather than differences in which colour it is.
Synonyms: colors, hues, tones, shades, tints
Antonyms: achromatism, colorlessness, monochrome
