Etymology: The "choke" in this word is the verb meaning to block a passage, so the original sense was roughly "filled so full that the passage is blocked." The spelling "chokkefull" is a variant of "chokefull," which joins the verb "choke" to "full." Later English often spelled it "chockfull," and many writers may have associated the word with "chock," a wooden wedge used to block a wheel, but the two are probably not the same source. The compound seems to have appeared in English around the 16th century, though I am not certain of the exact first recorded use.
