  2. An English cathedral city located in West Sussex, situated in the south of England near the coast
  3. A historic city in the south of England within West Sussex, home to a famous medieval cathedral

Etymology: Sussex's cathedral city is traditionally said to take its name from a man called Cissa, whose "ceaster" was his fortified settlement. "Ceaster" is itself an Old English borrowing of Latin "castra", meaning camp or fort, which is why so many English town names ending in "-chester" or "-caster" point back to Roman military sites. Some scholars instead see the first element as Old English "*cisse", meaning a gravelly place, which would make the name something like "the fort on gravel." The personal-name explanation is the one usually given, but the gravel reading remains a possibility.
