Chicer

Part of speech: adjective

Definitions

  1. Being stylishly elegant or fashionable in a refined manner
  2. Carrying an air of sophistication and modern taste
  3. Exhibiting a unique blend of charm and trendiness that stands out

Etymology: "Chicer" is simply the comparative of "chic", so the real story belongs to its root. The adjective "chic" came into English from French, where "chic" meant "elegant", and it is probably borrowed from German "Schick", meaning an elegant appearance or tasteful presentation. Those German roots connect to ideas of arranging and fitting things together, which suits the sense of something being neatly put together. The sharpest twist is that "chic" also has an unrelated namesake. It is borrowed from Yucatec Maya "chiʼik", meaning "coati", a raccoon-like animal, and also "buffoon". Two words that share a spelling and an ancient-sounding brevity have no common ancestry, so the stylish adjective and the clownish, long-nosed mammal are simply coincidental look-alikes. "Chicer" adds the regular comparative ending to show that one thing has more of that polished, up-to-date quality than another.
