Chevvy
Part of speech: verb, noun
Definitions
- To pester or harass someone persistently, often by nagging them until they hurry along or take action
- Relentlessly badgering or urging a person to move faster, typically through constant reminders and gentle pressure
- A verb meaning to keep at someone with repeated prodding, teasing or harrying in order to get them moving
Etymology: "Chevy" began as a huntsman's cry urging on the hounds, and the chase it called for gave the word its sense of pursuit. The English ballad "Chevy Chase," about a hunt in the border country around the Cheviot Hills, helped keep the word in circulation. From there, a chase that never lets up came to mean harrying someone with repeated prodding until they move. The same spelling also names the car brand, through a clipping of Chevrolet, but that nickname is a separate word that happens to match. The verb keeps its older, hunting-field sense.
