Etymology: "Chevvied" is the past tense of "chevvy," a verb meaning to harass someone with persistent nagging or pursuit. The verb began as a hunting cry. "Chivy" or "chevy" was shouted to urge hounds on during a chase, and the shout later became a verb for the chase itself, then for any hounding of a person. The cry's ultimate source is uncertain. Some have linked it to an Irish word for chase, "sioghadh," but that connection is doubtful. "Chevvy," "chivvy," and "chivy" are all spellings of the same verb, and "chevvied" is simply one of them with the regular past-tense ending.
