Etymology: "Checkerberries" is the plural of "checkerberry," a name for the wintergreen plant and its red berries, and the word is a plain compound built on the "checker" part of a tree name. The name transfers from the chequer tree, a shrub or small tree whose fruits look much like the plant's berries, so the naming rests on a visual resemblance rather than any shared botany. The berries themselves carry the older history. In North America, the plant's red fruit was long gathered and eaten, and the leaves were brewed for tea and used in folk remedies, which is where the note about traditional medicine and food comes from. The word therefore describes a plant that was valued for practical reasons, named after a different tree that happens to bear similar fruit.
